Alex Chappell ESPN

Chappell spent the past three years covering college football for ESPN and the SEC Network, the role represents a homecoming and the realization of a goal Alex has been working toward for more than a decade. “Not many people get to say they work in their hometown,” Chappell, 30, said in a phone interview. “It’s really special for me, and it’s really a dream come true.”

While many aspiring sports broadcasters dream of working at ESPN, Chappell said she has had her eyes set on covering baseball for MASN for years. The Walt Whitman High graduate grew up going to Orioles games at Camden Yards, often when the Boston Red Sox were in town.

Her father, Philip Corddry, the person primarily responsible for her love baseball, spent a few seasons as a pitcher in the Boston organization after attending the University of Maryland. Chappell, who became a Nationals fan when the team arrived in 2005, admired former MASN on-field reporters Amber Theoharis and Kristina Akra and interned with Tim Brant at WJLA (Channel 7).

Alex Chappell Washington Nationals

There are a lot of fresh faces at Washington Nationals spring training this year, and one of them will be responsible for familiarizing fans with the new additions to the roster beginning this weekend.

Alex Chappell, who was hired as the Nationals’ on-field reporter following Dan Kolko’s promotion last month to host of the team’s pre-and postgame shows on MASN, will make her debut during Saturday’s broadcast of Washington’s exhibition opener against the Houston Astros.

Alex Chappell Sports

After graduating from the University of Alabama, Chappell landed a job as a sports reporter at the CBS affiliate in Birmingham. From there, she had a brief stint as a reporter for “Redskins Nation” on Comcast SportsNet before she was hired as a sports reporter by Boston’s WHDH in September 2013.

She spent three years in New England, during which time she met her husband, Scott Chappell. The couple married last month.

Alex Chappell Nats

Chappell was back home from February 26, 2019, with the #Nats and MASN. The Nationals MASN broadcasts were set to look quite different for the 2019 season. On-field reporter Dan Kolko was promoted to the host of pre-and post-game coverage (you go, Kolko), and was being joined by former Nats third base coach Bo Porter.

Dan was replaced by DC native Alex Chappel for on-field duties, and she was excited about this new opportunity. She grew up a baseball fan in the D.C. suburbs in Bethesda, Maryland, and she has been a Nats fan from the beginning.

Chappell attended the University of Alabama, where she jumped headfirst into covering sports almost as she arrived on the campus. Since her graduation, She had numerous jobs in sports. She worked in Birmingham covering all sports at both Alabama and Auburn, handling all the shooting, editing, and writing involved with the gig by herself. She then moved on to Boston, where she covered all of the New England sports teams for the local NBC affiliate for three years.

Alex’s addition to MASN will return a female to the broadcast team for the first time since Dan took over for Julie Alexandria after the 2013 season. She recognizes that there is still a difference in being a woman covering a sport with all male players.
