David Hoyle, a former state senator from North Carolina who was a formidable advocate for taxation, economic growth, and education when Democrats last held the majority in the General House, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84, according to his son.
Hoyle passed away at his house in Dallas, the county seat of Gaston, where he had previously been elected mayor while he was in his 20s. Son David Hoyle Jr. said that after having a stroke a few years ago, his health has been deteriorating.
Hoyle was a co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee for a significant amount of his nine tenure in the Senate.
Marc Basnight of Dare County, who led the Senate at the time, regarded Hoyle and Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand as his top lieutenants.
