James Montgomery and Ora Gray welcomed a son named Montgomery into the world on June 16, 1940, in Columbus, Mississippi.
They shared a home with her American Native great-grandmother Miss Pathenia. Her family relocated to St. Louis, Missouri when she was six years old.
She was the eldest of nine siblings, and she grew up in the Pruitt-Igoe projects. James, Walter, Robert, George, Everett, Linda, and Janice are some of her siblings.
Montgomery was a Baptist as a child but has converted to Methodism. She was a member of the church choir, a graduate of Pruitt High School, and a student at Curtis Elementary School.
With his longtime partner Jenae Wallick, Norman, the son of Montgomery gave birth to Timmy during the start of the OWN series’ run. AJ was the second child they had together after that. But regrettably, the connection didn’t last.
