Today marks 1 year since I bought any brand new item of clothing (Except for underwear 🩲!) . I wrote about this in a post last November having started this journey 3 months prior. I was fed up of the disposable nature of clothing nowadays, how it was affecting the environment, and how I felt about myself always wanting to look shiny and new. . According to @lovethesales £385billion worth of clothing was dumped in landfill and burnt in 2018! That’s insane 🤯 . My aim was just to carry on for as long as I could, but I didn’t think I’d get to a year to be honest. It’s really not been as much of a challenge as you’d expect. You’d be surprised at how much clothing you have in the wardrobe when you really sort through it, and how lots of it can be refashioned into new items and given a new lease of life. <Hello new jean shorts!> There are also tonnes of amazing second hand clothes out there, and if you have a special occasion why not borrow, or hire outfits? . In between all this I had a baby, and I had worried that I’d need to break my challenge, but I didn’t need to buy a single maternity outfit. I borrowed some clothes, and I made do with the baggier outfits I had, and at no point did I feel like I needed more. . I occasionally miss the chase for a bargain, but I don’t really miss the catch, because that feeling when you wear something brand new for the first time doesn’t last, and it’s part of a bigger worldwide problem. I am proud of the small part I can play in supporting sustainable fashion. . Now I know I’ll want to buy something at some point, and that’s ok when I do, this isn’t meant to be a punishment, but I’m going to try to make that item a good quality one, something that will last me years. Not just a wear and chuck. (Do I hear Prada calling?! 🤣) . WHICH VITAMINS TO TAKE IN PREGNANCY & BREASTFEEDING? . I want to make a little dent in the list of questions you guys sent me last week and start with this one . Understandably, women want to optimise their fertility & pregnancy as much a possible and can be tempted to invest in a lot of different pills, lotions & potions. But here is a list of what you are recommended to take & when: . ❇️Prenatal Start taking folic acid 400mcg for 2-3 months prior to conceiving (I know this bit is tricky, because it’s not always planned, so just start it as soon as poss). It helps to reduce the risk of your baby having spina bifida. There are some people that need to take a slightly higher amount of folic acid: – you have had a previous pregnancy affected by spina bifida – you/your partner have spina bifida – you are taking certain epilepsy meds – you have coeliac disease, diabetes, sickle-cell anaemia or thalassaemia – your BMI is >30 . ❇️During pregnancy Continue the folic acid for the first 3 months of pregnancy. Also start taking 10mcg vitamin D3. The @rcobsgyn suggest taking this throughout pregnancy. For the non-pregnant general public they should be taking this anyway Sept-March, or throughout the year if you aren’t managing to get out into the sun, cover your skin or are of a darker skin tone . ❇️After pregnancy: Some women lose blood during the labour & need to take iron supplements but you will be informed by your midwife/GP if this is the case. Continue the vitamin D whilst breastfeeding or for indications as above . What NOT to take during pregnancy: Vitamin A. It can harm the baby’s nervous system development. It can be found in liver, pate and fish liver oil. But may also be in some multivitamin supplements so please check before you start any. It’s put in a lot of “skin health” products, under the name Retinol, so look out for that too . There are lots of vitamins & minerals that are needed for a healthy pregnancy, including vit C, calcium, B vitamins. But these are all things you should be able to get from a well-rounded healthy diet. If you are vegan/vegetarian & struggle getting enough vit b12/calcium/iron from your diet, discuss this further with your MW/GP
