Bill Gothard family consisted of his father Bill Sr, his mother Carmen Gothard, and five siblings. The former IBLP leader was born as the third child of his parents in Illinois.
Gothard is the controversial former leader of the religious group Institute in Basic Life Principles. He established the organization under the name Campus Teams in 1961.
The objective of the institute was to help at-risk teenagers and their parents find got and make wise life decisions. He eventually designed a course called Basic Youth Conflicts which he first introduced during a two-week session at Wheaton College in 1964.
During the early years, Bill only had a handful of followers. Even at the 1964 Basic Youth Conflicts conference, only 46 participants were present. In 1965, 120 students enrolled in the program. And, within a few years, the handful of followers had grown to over 10000 members attending each of his seminars.
Further, 1974 stats showed that over 2.5 million followers had attended the seminars since its commencement in 1964. Similarly, in 1990, the organization hosted its first overseas program in New Zealand. The Institute’s influence was so strong at the time that even the New Zealand Ministry of Education approached it to guide the youths, who were getting suspended or dropping out of schools.
Moreover, in 1993, IBLP set up a ministry in Australia. However, the golden years of Bill and his organization ended at the start of the 2010s. A woman named Lizzie first came out with accusations of sexual assault; she alleged that the religious leader had touched her inappropriately when she was a teenager.
By 2014, over 30 women had come out with similar accusations against Gothard. The IBLP Board came forward with a statement claiming that an outside counsel found that, while Bill was not criminally liable, he had indeed acted inappropriately in front of the women. He resigned from his position as the President of the Institute in Basic Life Principles the same year.
As of 2023, famous TV families like the Duggars and the Bates family are part of the organization. The latest documentary Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets has brought back the controversy surrounding Gothard and the Christian organization.

Also, it is evidenced by Jana’s Instagram profile that she is very much involved with the Duggar family. Gothard also claimed that he was once tempted to get married but the relationship didn’t work out in the long run. According to the preacher, he never met anyone who would be worthy of a commitment for life.
When the accusations against the 88-year-old became vocal in 2014, he mentioned that he had never touched a girl immorally or kissed a girl.
All in all, the preacher has contradicted his teachings when it came to getting married. Although he has advocated for a nuclear family with the father as the head, Bill believes he serves a higher purpose.
