Fred Cowgill Biography

Fred Cowgill is an American Emmy award-winning Sportscaster for WLKY. He has been the Sports Director for the station for 32 years.

Cowgill graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Broadcasting and Management. He also graduated from Boston University with an MS in Broadcast Journalism.

He has hosted charity golf tournaments in Louisville for over 25 years. The tournaments have netted more than $2 million to fight diabetes and cancer.

Cowgill has also run an internship program for 38 years. The program has promoted over a hundred professionals into the business.

He is a member of The Greater Jefferson County Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and The American Diabetes Association Hall of Fame.

Cowgill began his broadcasting career in 1975 at WRCC Radio in Suffern, N.Y. His television sports career began at CNN in 1980. Cowgill also worked for the ABC affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., (WOKR/WHAM) before coming to Louisville in 1986.

WLKY

Cowgill has been a broadcaster for 43 years. He is a Sportscaster for WLKY. He has been a Sports Director for 32 years for WLKY, which is by far the longest tenure of anyone in that job. It is also one of the longest tenures in the history of the Louisville, KY Television Market.

Cowgill has covered almost every major sporting event in the country in his 38 year TV sports career. These include 32 Kentucky Derbys, 16 Final Fours and 5 national college basketball champions.

One of his favorite stories is American Pharoah in 2015 winning horse racing’s first Triple Crown in 37 years. His other favorite is the historic 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup win at Valhalla.

In 2016, Cowgill was Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He also went ahead and won “Best of Kentucky” Awards from Kentucky Monthly and “Kentucky Best Sportscaster” Awards.

Later in 2017, he won n an Emmy for The WLKY Team Coverage of the funeral for Muhammad Ali. Cowgill was also named the winner of The Kentucky Derby Festival’s Dean Eagle Award for his longtime service to the horse racing industry.

Cowgill won his 17th “Best of Louisville” Award from Louisville Magazine as Louisville’s Best TV Sportscaster in 2018. These were the most ever won by a television news personality in the history of the awards.
