She was the first woman to qualify and participate in the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. Janet Guthrie (born March 7, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa) is a former professional racing car driver who was the first woman to qualify and compete in both races. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Guthrie went on to work for Republic Aviation. Beginning in 1963, she competed on the SCCA circuit in a Jaguar XK 140 and by 1972, she had made the transition to full-time racing. Guthrie finished 15th in the 1976 World 600, making her the first woman to participate in a NASCAR Winston Cup race at a superspeedway in the United States.
Guthrie would go on to participate in a total of four more races throughout the season after. During the next season, she participated in her maiden Daytona 500, where she finished 12th when her car’s engine failed due to two cylinder failure with 10 laps left to go. Despite this, she was nevertheless named Top Rookie for the race in which she competed. Guthrie went on to participate in 33 races for NASCAR over the course of four seasons in the sport. It is the greatest result by a woman in a top-tier NASCAR race, with a sixth-place finish at Bristol in 1977, that she is most proud of. With engine problems, Guthrie qualified for and raced in the 1977 Indianapolis 500, but ended in 29th place as a result. She would go on to participate in two more Indy 500s, reaching as high as tenth place in the event in 1978. In all, she participated in 11 IndyCar races, placing as high as fifth in the standings. In the aftermath of her failed attempt to qualify for the 1976 race, several of the drivers in the male-dominated sport claimed that the sole reason she did not qualify was mostly due to the fact that she was female. These remarks infuriated then three-time champion A.J. Foyt to the point that he ordered Guthrie to participate in a four-lap timed practise around the Indianapolis circuit using his backup vehicle as a result of his statements.
