Bernard Lance Cairns, better known as Lance Cairns, is a former New Zealand cricketer who played as an all-rounder for the team. Moreover, he is the father of Chirs Cairns, a well-known New Zealand cricketer.

Throughout much of his career, he was also recognized for the unique bat he used. The shoulders of the bat were planed down to make a conical shape rather than a rectangular shape, earning it the name “Excalibur.”

Furthermore, he was a swing bowler who bowled with an unusual “front on” movement. He was also able to garb 89 ODI wickets and 130 Test wickets throughout his career.

In 1983, he took ten wickets marking New Zealand’s first-ever win on English land.

The former cricketer was born in the year 1949. His age is currently 72 years old. He blows candles for his birthday on the 10th of October each year. 

He was born and raised in Picton, Marlborough, in New Zealand. 

Lance Cairns Wife And Children

Lance Cairns is married to his wife, Sue Cairns. 

Together they shared two beautiful children, a son and a daughter of their own. Their children’s names are Chris Cairns and Louise Cairns. 

Sadly, his daughter Louise was killed at Rolleston in a train accident in August 1993. 

In September 2008, they completed a 1,001 km (622 miles) walk promoting rail safety awareness.

Interestingly, Lance moved to Gisborne, where he met a girl named Carol Edwards and later married her. Unfortunately, she died in 2008 from cancer.

About Lance Cairns’s health update, since the age of 17, he has been profoundly deaf. 

The cause for his deafness was from working in noisy environments from a year young age.

He had a cochlear implant in December 2009. He is also Ambassador for The National Foundation for the Deaf Inc. He also plays a very important role in increasing awareness for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community.

In 1998, Cairns was the focus of a Paul Holmes-hosted episode of TVNZ’s “This is your life.” After retiring from cricket, Cairns focused on his golf talents and became a low-handicap golfer known for his extraordinarily long shots.
