He played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, and Milwaukee Brewers. Nelson was a two-time All-Star and a four-time World Series champion with the Yankees. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 22nd round of the 1984 MLB draft but did not sign.
He attended the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville Campus, where he was a standout pitcher. He was drafted again by the Mariners in the 2nd round of the 1987 MLB draft. Nelson made his MLB debut with the Mariners on April 16, 1992. He quickly established himself as one of the best relief pitchers in the league.
