Keanon Lowe Biography

Keanon Lowe is an American former University of Oregon Ducks wide receiver and current Football and Track and Field Coach for Parkrose High School. He became well known and hailed for helping to avert a potential tragedy at the school by tackling a student wielding a shotgun and subsequently hugging the gunman in Portland, Oregon.

Lowe is a football coach for Parkrose High School. On May 17, 2019, he had just entered a classroom to teach when a gunman opened the door holding a shotgun. Lowe was heralded as a hero when it was reported that he brought down the would-be school shooter before anyone at a Portland high school could get hurt.

Even more heroic was his act of empathy that he showed the shooter shortly after disarming him. Lowe hugged him and talked to him and showed him compassion contrary to what many would have done faced by a similar situation.

The gunman who was involved in the gun incident in May 2019 at Parkrose high school was a student. He was identified as 18-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz. After being subdued, the student was charged and later sentenced to three years of probation and mental health treatment. This was after pleading guilty to misdemeanor possession of a loaded firearm in publicand felony possession of a firearm in a public building.

On May 17, 2019, Lowe disarmed and thereafter hugged a gunman wielding a shotgun before he could open fire on students at Parkrose High School. Due to a public records request from KOIN 6 in Portland, video of the incident has since been released.

While the footage does not show Lowe tackling the student, as was reported at the time, it does show the former player snatching the shotgun away from the kid and embracing him while trying to calm him down.

“After I’m in the classroom for 20 seconds, the door opens and I’m within arm’s length of the door, about three feet away from the door, and there’s a kid with a gun, a shotgun, as soon as that door opens. Pretty crazy situation, you know. In a fraction of a second, I analyzed everything really fast. I saw the look in his face, looked at his eyes, looked at the gun, realized it was a real gun and then my instincts just took over. I lunged for the gun, put two hands on the gun, and he had his two hands on the gun, and the students are running out of the classroom and screaming. I’m just making sure the barrel of the gun [wasn’t aimed at anyone].

I think the universe works in amazing ways,” he said. “I think I’ve gone through stuff in my life that prepared me for that moment and I’m lucky and I’m happy that I was in that classroom for those kids and I was able to prevent that tragedy. I don’t know if ‘hero’ is the right word but the universe works in mysterious ways and I was meant to be in that classroom and I was meant to stop a tragedy.”

Lowe is a native of Gresham, in Multnomah County, Oregon, USA, where he grew up. He had a job as an offensive analyst with the San Francisco 49ers before returning to Oregon to ‘change lives’ after best friend’s overdose death. Lowe was born in 1992 and is therefore 27 years old as of 2019.

On October 19, 2019, Lowe was awarded his latest honor for disarming, wrestling and holding down a Parkrose student who entered a class with a shotgun on May 17. No one was injured during the incident. The ceremony took place at Portland Police Bureau’s North Precinct.

Antoinette Edwards, director of Portland’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention, presented Lowe with the award for his “selfless heroism’’ on behalf of the Community Peace Collaborative, a group of community members, outreach workers and police who work together to combat violence in the city.
