Larry Gene Nelson (born September 10, 1947) is an American professional golfer who has competed on both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. He has won many events on both tours. Originally from Alabama, Nelson grew up in Acworth, Georgia, about an hour and a half north-west of Atlanta. He didn’t play golf as a kid, which is unusual for a great professional golfer. Instead, he concentrated on basketball and baseball while in high school. Nelson began playing golf when he was 21 years old, after returning from his service in the army in Vietnam (Nelson was a 20-year-old newlywed when he was drafted into the U.S. Army). Nelson was initially introduced to golf by Ken Hummel, a soldier and buddy from his army regiment. While learning how to play the game, Nelson meticulously read Ben Hogan’s book The Five Fundamentals of Golf, written by Ben Hogan himself. He quickly discovered that he had natural ability for the game, scoring 100 points on his debut outing and 70 points after nine months. Kennesaw Junior College awarded him his diploma in 1970, and the following year he began working as a professional musician. He qualified on the PGA Tour when he was 27 years old. It was in 1979 that he had his breakout year, winning twice and finishing second in the money list behind Tom Watson. Nelson was victorious on the PGA Tour ten times, with three of his victories being major tournaments, a significant percentage of his total. When he won the 1981 PGA Championship by four shots, he became the first American to win a major championship.
At the Oakmont Country Club in 1983, he won the U.S. Open after rallying from seven shots behind at the half-way stage to beat Tom Watson by a single stroke. Nelson set a new U.S. Open record by shooting 65-67 over the last 36 holes of the tough Oakmont course, breaking a 51-year-old mark set by Gene Sarazen in 1968. Nelson’s record score of 132 (ten under par) has not been matched since. In 1987, he ended tied with Lanny Wadkins after the regular 72 holes of the PGA Championship, and he went on to win the championship with a par on the first playoff hole, which he completed with a par on the second playoff hole. Nelson represented the United States in the Ryder Cup three times, in 1979, 1981, and 1987. His 9–3–1 record is one of the greatest since the tournament was renamed USA against Europe in 1979; he had a perfect 9–0–0 record after the first two games of the series. He also competed on the Japan Golf Tour, where he won four events. Nelson has had a great Champions Tour career since turning 50 in 1997, winning 19 times in total, despite the fact that he has yet to win a senior major. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in October 2006 after being elected to the hall in April 2006. From the PGA of America, Nelson earned the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the game. “This award recognises exceptional people who demonstrate leadership and humanitarian characteristics, such as honesty, sportsmanship, and passion for the game of golf,” according to the award’s description. Nelson is also involved in the design of golf courses.
