Divorce Court Judge Mablean Ephriam

Divorce Court was restored and she was appointed to be the show’s arbitrator in 1999. Mablean became the first star of the original version of Divorce Court which was reality-based. Originally, that version of the divorce court used dramatic reenactments of true divorce cases. Ephriam became the first African-American plus female to lead the series.

During her time presiding over in the show, she has been noted for her humor. She had a trademark phrase “Look deep before you leap. She advised would-be newlyweds to examine each other’s behaviors and also attitudes carefully before they decide to wed. While she encouraged her litigants to discuss sensitive issues to get to the heart of what the root problem of the divorce was, Mablean was also fast in restoring order in the courtroom when things were unbearable.

Mablean would at times scould her litigants for their respectful behavior towards her and each other in the courtroom. It was then announced in March 2006 that she was exiting the series after the 2005–06 season. Reportedly, Mablean and the Divorce Court failed to come into an agreement regarding an extension of the contract. Judge Lynn Toler succeeded her.
