The embattled Trail Blazers center has moved to Los Angeles for the summer and is training with noted NBA skills coach Drew Hanlen, who among other things has made an adjustment to his shooting mechanics.

“I’ve been working out a lot,’’ Leonard said Saturday while watching the Blazers’ Summer League entrant in Las Vegas. “I’m confident where I’m at in my progression this summer. And, I feel healthy. I feel as good as I have in five years.’’

In April, after a disappointing 2016-2017 season that was in part stalled by hip and back injuries, Leonard said he was entering this offseason with an excitement unlike any of his five previous summers.

Three months into his training, Leonard has even more verve. He said the first phase of his training with Hanlen has been centered around his technique, and the second phase will begin at the end of July with some one-on-one play with another Hanlen client, Philadelphia center Joel Embiid.

Later in the summer, Leonard said he will play 5-on-5 at the Clippers’ practice facility and UCLA, which are noted gathering spots for pickup games between NBA players in the offseason.

Leonard has been under scrutiny in Portland since he was the 11th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, a particularly after last season, when on the heels of signing a four-year, $41 million deal he averaged 5.4 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from three-point range.

After visiting with former teammate Wesley Matthews in Dallas over the All-Star Break, he took Matthews’ advice to change his offseason routine by hiring Hanlen, who has an extensive client list that includes NBA players Dwight Howard, Bradley Beal, Andrew Wiggins, and Jordan Clarkson.

“I’ve learned a ton from him,’’ Leonard said.

After studying Leonard’s game tapes, Hanlen determined that Leonard’s feet were too close as he shot and that his shoulders leaned back slightly, causing him to aim his shots. With a wider base and a concentration on quicker wrist-release, Leonard says his shot is feeling much improved.

“There have been a lot of little, intricate things Drew has pointed out that helps me build a better shot routine,’’ Leonard said. “Hopefully that transitions into games to where I just feel really good with what I’m doing and how I’m doing it.’’

The new Heat big man, who has acquired this offseason as part of the four-team Jimmy Butler trade, is hoping that momentum carries over into his first season in Miami.

“In Portland, it was kind of a long process for me to continue to improve, understand myself as a man and as a player,” Leonard said, wearing a Heat “Culture” T-shirt as he spoke to reporters Wednesday in front of the Heat locker room at AmericanAirlines Arena. “And over the last couple of seasons, I’ve really felt that I’ve slowly come into my own. But at 7-1 and 255 pounds, one of the most unique aspects of Leonard’s skill set is his ability to make threes. He shot 45 percent on threes (50 for 111) last season and is a career 38.5 percent three-point shooter, a skill the Heat values in its power rotation players.

With Heat coach Erik Spoelstra known to encourage his shooters to be aggressive from the three-point line, Leonard feels he’s ready to make the outside shot an even bigger part of his game. He attempted a career-high 228 threes in 2015-16.

“I’m going to do what’s asked of me. If I’m open, I’m going to shoot it,” Leonard said, with the Heat opening training camp Tuesday at Keiser University in West Palm Beach. “That’s one thing I feel that particularly last year, I started to do a better job of is take more contested shots. But Leonard, who is due $11.3 million this season, is entering the final year of his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Leonard was drafted with the 11th overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2012 NBA draft. On July 13 he signed his rookie scale contract with the Trail Blazers. Meyers Leonard has signed a four-year, $41 million deal with the Trail Blazers, his agent Aaron Mintz said on Sunday.

In November, Leonard turned down a 4-year, $40 million offer from the Blazers, saying he was elected to “bet on me.”

That bet earned him $1 million.

“Today is a day which is hard to describe,” Leonard said in a text message. “I’m overcome with happiness and joy. I’m thankful for the people who have remained loyal and loving in my life.

“This is a product of a lot of hard work and time. I feel like I have found a new gear mentally and physically and really am excited for the next four years. The future is going to be bright with this team.”

The 7-foot-1 big man averaged 8.4 points and 5.1 rebounds last season for the Blazers before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in April.

Leonard said his rehabilitation has been going “very well” and that he is hoping to be back around the start of the regular season, which will give the Blazers outside shooting and an interior post defender.

A first-round pick of the Blazers with the 11th overall pick in 2012, Leonard has emerged as an important space creator in the Blazers offense and the team has long considered him a part of their vision moving forward.

The Blazers now have 13 players under contract for the 2016-2017 season, with restricted free agents Allen Crabbe and Maurice Harkless still unsigned. The Blazers have until 8:59 p.m. Sunday to decide whether to match Crabbe’s 4-year, $75 million offer sheet with Brooklyn.

Meyers Leonard suffered a dislocated shoulder at practice on March 16 that required surgery. He has been shut down for the season.

Leonard was out six to eight months after surgery to repair his shoulder, per Casey Holdahl, a digital reporter for the Trail Blazers.

Leonard already missed seven games earlier when he dislocated the same shoulder during Portland’s 113-101 loss to San Antonio on Nov. 11. The Illinois product started the initial nine games of the 2015-16 campaign but has largely come off the bench behind Noah Vonleh since that injury.

He can stretch the floor at 7’1”, which makes him a nightmare matchup for many opposing big men, but is also capable of banging around down low on the glass.

Vonleh would continue to serve as the starting power forward in the playoffs, and the Trail Blazers also have a rotation of big men such as Chris Kaman, Ed Davis, and Mason Plumlee to shoulder more minutes with Leonard gone for the season.
