Michael was drafted into the army and served for two years in 1970, during the Vietnam War. While serving in the army, he was chosen to write and direct the plays for the Army’s V-Corp Training Roadshow. After completing his university education in Washington, he returned to Los Angeles, where he was noticed by Budd Friedman.

Later, he was noticed by Billy Crystal who invited him to perform on one of his comedy specials. Michael became a cast member on ABC’s Fridays in 1980. Michael Richards Young Doctors in Love was among the most popular comedy films in 1982

In 1989 he became part of the NBC series, Seinfeld, as Cosmo Kramer.  The show had become one of the most popular sitcoms on TV by the mid-90s. This role earned him three Emmy awards.  Michael became part of a new NBC series in 2000, The Michael Richards Show. However, the series was later canceled because of low ratings.
