Richard Benson, an Italian musician who shaped underground Rome music in the 1970s, died at the age of 67 on Tuesday, May 10th. Benson was also revealed to have had heart problems and had already undergone surgery. It is currently unknown whether his death is related to his heart problems.
Benson recorded a self-titled album with the progressive rock band Buon Vecchio Charlie in 1971, but it wasn’t released until 1990 when the original record company released some of their early productions on CD. Benson sings and plays 12-string guitar on the album.
He took part in the Villa Pamphili festival in 1972. His first single, “Animal Zoo,” an Italo disco production, was released in 1983. The following year, he released his second single, “Renegade,” a song with electro-rock overtones (along with the B-side “Flash Back”).
Over time, Benson appeared in several music-related television programmes, including Renzo Arbore’s “Quelli Della Notte,” in which he portrayed “the metalhead” in the Look directed by Roberto D’Agostino -Parade. He hosted the Radio Rock show in the early 1990s, where he focused on the various types of guitars and how they were used.
