He is the son of poker superstar Doyle Brunson and was born on August 7, 1969, in Los Angeles, California. Todd Alan Brunson is an American professional poker player. In spite of the fact that Brunson’s father has become a poker star, Brunson did not learn to play the game when he was younger. It wasn’t until he was studying law at Texas Tech University that he was able to teach himself how to play the instrument. He dropped out of school before his final year in order to pursue a professional career. Playing cash games has been the focus of his poker career for the most of the time. He and his father are well-known at the Bellagio, where they play in some of the casino’s most important cash games. In the last several years, he has been increasingly involved in tournament competition. In 2005, Todd Brunson won a bracelet in Omaha High Low at the World Series of Poker, making the Brunsons the first father-son team to each win a bracelet at the World Series of Poker. Aside from his father’s book, Super System 2 (the 2005 sequel to Doyle Brunson’s poker book Super/System), Todd Brunson also contributed to it by authoring the section on Seven Card Stud High Low Eight or Better.
A tournament he participated in early in his career earned him the moniker “Darkhorse,” since he was considered a big underdog yet managed to outlast the likes of Chip Reese and other well-known poker players. He was a competitor in the Poker Superstars 2 Grand Finale, when he was defeated by Johnny Chan. At the end of 2006, he played in the Poker Superstars 3 Grand Final against Antonio Esfandiari, and he was victorious after winning the first 3 matches in a best three out of 5 heads-up style. He was down to 170,000 chips in the third round, compared to Esfandiari’s 3,830,000 chips, and he ultimately won by earning more than five double ups.
Brunson was the winner of the $400,000 first prize. The next year, he participated in the Poker Superstars 2 quarter-finals freeroll, where he won the $500,000 first prize after beating Ted Forrest in the final heads-up matchup. As recounted in the 2005 book The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King, he is most known for winning more than $13.5 million in a heads-up, $50,000-$100,000 limit hold’em game over two days in a heads-up, $50,000-$100,000 limit hold’em game. The Ultimate Poker Challenge series is another tournament series in which Todd has participated. He has also featured on the GSN television series High Stakes Poker, which he hosts. Todd had a cameo appearance in one of the last episodes of the television series Stargate Atlantis (#519 “Vegas”) in 2009, during a poker game staged in Las Vegas that was shown on NBC. As of 2012, his cumulative live tournament wins were more than $3.6 million. Those $999,094 in earnings are split among his 33 cashes as the WSOP account for $999,094.
