His son’s musical career skyrocketed with his second album, My Way, his first number one record, which earned him wide recognition. 

Then he went on giving back-to-back hits earning him eight Grammy Awards, 34 ASCAP Awards, nine Soul Train Music Awards, and eight American Awards.

Failure of first marriage

He was married to Jonetta Patton in 1976. They fell for each other and were madly in love. 

He used to make her feel special and wanted every moment of her at the beginning of their marriage. 

However, after a few years of their marriage, his wife left him because of his addiction to d*ugs.

He deprived his son of getting a father’s love while he was just one year old. Later he remarried his second wife. 

With his second wife, he shared four children, three daughters, Tomika Johnson, Ursula Parson, Ushyra Raymond, and one son, Shelly Lusk.

He has been an absentee father to his son. 

His son did not get a chance to know his dad, and therefore he was not a part of his life. 

But he managed to keep in touch with his son while struggling with a long-running addiction to crack c*caine. 

His son was ready to reconnect with him by letting go of everything. 

He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and needed a liver transplant, for which his son was prepared to help. 

Still, unfortunately, he slipped into the Coma during the transplant and never recovered.

1. He died of a heart attack on 21st January 2008 at the age of 52 at an Atlanta hospital. The funeral took place at the Taylor funeral home chapel in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
