Vincent Trocheck Biography

Vincent Trocheck is an American professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Panthers in the third round, 64th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

He then played for the Detroit Little Caesars organization during which he was the two-time national champion and two-time league-leading scorer playing in the MWEHL. In his major junior career, Trocheck joined the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League after he was a 24th overall pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Draft. In his second season with the Spirit in 2010–11, he was selected to the CHL Top Prospects Game. On April 23, 2012, Trocheck was signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers.

Trocheck assisted on the winning goal as the Panthers snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the Maple Leafs 3-1.

“It was awesome. Never felt better,” Trocheck said. “Just thankful that I’m able to come back and play hockey again. It’s been a long time coming.”

He missed 27 games since breaking his right ankle in a game against the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 19. He practiced with the Panthers for the first time on Thursday.

Coach Bob Boughner said after the practice that Trocheck would probably return when the Panthers played the Nashville Predators in their first game after the All-Star break on Feb. 1, but the team decided he was ready.

“I don’t know. I’ve been pushing for a while,” Trocheck said. “The day it happened I gave Dave (DiNapoli, the team trainer) a date. I said Jan. 21st is my date that I was going to come back.”

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead when Trocheck passed to Mike Matheson at the point and he one-timed a shot that beat Sparks with 5:01 left in the first.

“It was a great play by Troch to have the awareness to stop up and put it on a tee for me,” Matheson said.

Forward Vincent Trocheck emerged as an important player last season and on Sunday became the latest member of the Florida Panthers to sign a long-term contract.

Trocheck, who was a restricted free agent, signed a six-year contract. Financial terms were not released, but Sportsnet reported it is worth $28.5 million, an average annual value of $4.75 million.

Trocheck’s signing came one day after the Panthers signed free agent defenseman Jason Demers a five-year contract, and two days after defenseman Aaron Ekblad signed an eight-year extension and unrestricted free agent goalie James Reimer signed a five-year contract. Forward Reilly Smith signed a five-year extension Sunday and is the ninth Panthers player signed through at least the next five seasons, along with Ekblad, Demers, Reimer, defenseman Keith Yandle, goalie Roberto Luongo, and centers Aleksander Barkov and Nick Bjugstad.

The Panthers signed Yandle to a seven-year contract June 20 after acquiring him n trade with the New York Rangers.

“We’ve been signing all of our core guys to long-term deals,” Trocheck said. “It just helps us feel a lot more comfortable. I think we know after last season that we can compete with anybody in the League. And with the changes that we’ve made and the additions that we’ve made, it’s just a stepping stone.”

Trocheck, who will turn 23 on July 11, set NHL career highs with 25 goals and 53 points in 76 games last season. Trocheck fractured his ankle blocking a shot against the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 29 but returned for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and played the final two games against the New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference First Round.

Trocheck, a native of Pittsburgh, was named the NHL’s second star for the week ending March 13 and was named the third star of the week ending Feb. 7. During each week, Trocheck had six points in three games.

“Vincent played an important role in our success last season and will be a prominent part of the Panthers for years to come,” general manager Tom Rowe said. “He is another important piece of our talented young core of players.”

A third-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Trocheck played in 70 games his first two seasons before a breakout season in 2015-16 that had Jaromir Jagr referring to him at one point as the most valuable player on the team.

“It’s been a ride,” Trocheck said. “Last year going into camp I wasn’t even really positive that I’d be on the team and I was kind of fighting for a spot. I was able to go into camp and kind of make a little bit of an impact and halfway through the year got pretty comfortable. After I got my confidence, I think it was all (better) from there.

“Now that I was able to do what I did last year, it helps me going into this season. I’ve just got to try to build off of that now and hope that I can make strides and hopefully produce even more this year.”

Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck underwent successful surgery to repair a broken right ankle and will be out of the lineup indefinitely, the NHL team announced Wednesday, but GM Dale Tallon expects him back on the ice this season.
“Vinny is a tremendous competitor and leader for our club,” Tallon said in a statement. “It’s never easy to see a player and person like him suffer an injury like this, but we are confident that he will make a full recovery and be back on the ice with our team this season.”

Trocheck thanked his well-wishers and called the surgery “a success” in a tweet Wednesday morning, adding, in part: “The road to recovery begins now. I’ll be back before you know it.”
Trocheck, sustained the gruesome injury during the first period of Florida’s game Monday against the Senators in an awkward fall while chasing the puck. He had to be stretchered from the ice after several minutes.
