So he didn’t see his own swing until he was about 18 years old.

Moreover, two of Schauffele’s great-grandfathers were professional soccer players in Europe.

Johann Hoffmann was a member of the Austria national football team, winning national titles in Austria (SK Rapid Wien), Bohemia (DSV Saaz), and France (FC Sochaux; Racing Strasbourg).

He became a scratch player in 15 months. On May 5, 1988, Schauffele’s parents met at a San Diego University. They married three months later, in August.

The couple then relocated to Germany, where their first child, Nico, was born. They moved to San Diego after a few years, then to Hawaii, and back to San Diego, where Xander was born and raised.

Stefan’s counsel frequently extends beyond his son’s swing. Though the two laugh about the conflicts that can arise as a result of their stubborn personalities, especially during Stefan’s brief stint as his son’s caddie.

The elder Schauffele is quick to offer fatherly advice and encouragement.

He once told Xander that confidence is like a small plant that takes a long time to grow but can be destroyed in an instant.
