The kidnappers took him to Ohio. During the journey, they replaced the teenager’s phone with an older one. Eventually, John wanted to return home after noticing the news reports and social media posts about him, which caused Jason to drop him.

The episode suggests Jason was in love with John. He took their relationship to heart, but the latter wasn’t old enough.
