Ownerships and NFL franchises have usually been generational – family successions. NFL ownerships with its many restrictions have made it a no-go area for people belonging to strict religious groups or backgrounds and government associations or not-for-profit groups to share a stake in this association.
The strict implementation of these rules has over the years made the NFL trans-generational rather than business to business or business to individual ownership.
Who co-owns the NFL?
Being a part of the NFL entails a controlling owner to hold at minimum a 30% stake in the team. The NFL does not allow ownership groups of over 24 persons or any publicly traded corporations from purchasing NFL teams.
Most NFL teams belong to families with other groups or individuals owning allotted shares. There is no one person who owns the entire league but the league is formed out of 32 teams of which these teams are owned by entities.
The NFL is owned by the NFL franchise owners. A number of teams are owned by just one person, while others have dual ownership.
