Before making a name for himself in Hollywood, Lumbly’s first career was in journalism in Minnesota. It was during an assignment for a story about a workshop theatre that he was introduced to the world of acting. He was cast as an actor and found himself staying with the improvisational company for two years.

Lumbly’s passion for acting eventually led him to San Francisco, where he stumbled upon a newspaper advertisement seeking “two black actors for South African political plays.” He auditioned for the roles and was successful, landing one of the parts alongside the then-unknown actor, Danny Glover. As for the personal aspects of his life, Carl Lumbly has been married twice and is the proud father of a son. His first marriage was to the late actress Vonetta McGee, which lasted from 1987 until her passing in 2010. Together, they welcomed a son in 1988.
