On 30 September 1999, forty-nine people were exposed to radiation and two with a potentially lethal dose including Hisashi after Japan’s worst nuclear accident struck a uranium processing plant.

Who Was Hisashi Ouchi?

Hisashi Ouchi was a 35-year-old technician at the JCO facility, an affiliate of Sumitomo Metal Mining, in Tokaimura, 70 miles northwest of Tokyo.

The JCO facility converted uranium hexafluoride into enriched uranium dioxide fuel. He along with Masato Shinohara, and Yutaka Yokokawa were normal workers at the facility.

One day they were trying to speed up the process for the last few steps of the fuel conversion process to meet shipping requirements.

After that uncontrolled nuclear fission began immediately and resulted in a chain reaction became emitting intense gamma and neutron radiation.

Hisashi had his body draped over the tank while Masato stood on a platform to assist in pouring the solution. Yutaka was sitting at a desk four meters away.

All three were exposed to the radiation, suffering burns, becoming dizzy, and vomiting violently afterward.

Hisashi received the largest radiation exposure, resulting in rapid difficulties with mobility, coherence, and loss of consciousness.

Hisashi spent his time covered from head to toe in very special medicated gauze.

Also, he was said to be in a clean room having a lot of plastic sheeting in it. There were two air filters at the head of his bed to ward off any bacteria, molds, or viruses in the environment.

He was put on a ventilator soon after any of his skin started falling off. But none can be seen in this picture.

What Happened To Hisashi Ouchi?

Hisashi Ouchi died an agonizing death after suffering for 83 days in the Tokyo hospital.

In 1999, he was helping a colleague pour liters of uranium into a huge metal vat at the Tokaimura Nuclear Power Plant.

Following the incident, he was rushed to the University of Tokyo Hospital and the area surrounding the plant was put on lockdown.

Hisashi absorbed 10 Sieverts of radiation, experienced severe damage to his internal organs, and had a near-zero white blood cell count.

Doctors found that Ouchi had no white blood cells and was in need of extensive skin grafts and multiple blood transfusions.

He was kept alive due to his family’s request even though doctors cleared that he will not survive and was likely to suffer from the immense pain.

But his family hoped till his last breath that he will be able to make it to the end.
