Aames began acting as a child in the late 1960s, appearing in episodes including Gunsmoke, The Wonderful World of Disney, Adam-12, and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.
On the ABC-TV series The Odd Couple in 1971, he played Leonard Unger, the son of Felix Unger (Tony Randall), a character that was later played by Leif Garrett. The next year, he played Jamie Boyle in the animated series Wait Until Your Father Gets Home.
He appeared as a guest star on several television shows, including The Waltons. In the 1974 miniseries Benjamin Franklin, he played a 12-year-old Benjamin Franklin. The next year, he co-starred in the television series Swiss Family Robinson.
He earned the role of Tommy Bradford in the comedy-drama Eight Is Enough in 1977. During this time, he was the lead singer/guitarist of a band called Willie Aames & Paradise.
The trio, which was formed while Aames was in junior high school, finally secured a recording contract with CBS Custom Label. During this time, Aames made his film debut in Scavenger Hunt.
After the series ended in 1981, Aames went on to star in a number of films, including Zapped! with Scott Baio and Paradise with Phoebe Cates. Prior to playing Buddy Lembeck on Charles in Charge in 1984, Aames portrayed Robbie Hamlin on the ABC soap drama The Edge of Night.
From 1983 through 1985, he played the voice of Hank in the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. After Charles in Charge ended in 1990, Aames presented the game show The Krypton Factor.
From 1995 through 2003, Aames played Bibleman in the direct-to-video Christian superhero series, before departing to spend more time with his family. Robert T. Schlipp took his post.
Aames’ career took a new turn in 2010 when he began working as a Cruise Director for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. He afterward worked for Oceania and Viking (Ocean) Cruises until returning to acting in 2016.
