Lester Joseph Gillis (December 6, 1908 – November 27, 1934), also known as George Nelson, was a bank robber and assassin during the 1930s. Baby Face Nelson was the nickname given to Gillis because of his young looks and tiny height. Nelson, who was known among his criminal friends as “Jimmy,” formed a relationship with John Dillinger, assisting him in escaping from jail in the infamous Crown Point, Indiana Jail breakout, and was subsequently dubbed “Public Enemy Number One” along with the other gang members. Nelson is responsible for the murders of numerous individuals and is the only person to have murdered three FBI agents in the line of duty. After a firefight known as “The Battle of Barrington,” Nelson was shot and killed by FBI officers.
