Elizabeth Wanjiru Wathuti is the creator of the Green Generation Initiative, a Kenyan environmental and climate activist.

The campaign encourages young people to enjoy nature and be environmentally conscious from an early age and has planted 30,000 trees seedlings around the country.

In 2019, Wathuti was named one of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans by the Africa Youth Awards.

In addition to that, Wathuti also received the Africa Green Person of the Year Award from the Eleven Eleven Twelve Foundation.

Wathuti earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Community Development from Kenyatta University.

Who are Elizabeth Wathuti’s parents?

Elizabeth Wanjiru Wathuti has not revealed anything regarding her parents out in the media yet. However, we do know that the young activist’s parents are super supportive.

Once, the activist’s mother suggested that if Elizabeth wanted to see Maathai, she would advise her that Wanjiru should study hard, just like Maathai, her inspiration.

For her extraordinary interest and commitment to environmental conservation, she was awarded the Wangari Maathai Scholarship.

Elizabeth Wathuti is also a full member of the Green Belt Movement, created by Wathuti’s role model and significant inspiration, Professor Wangari Maathai.

Her efforts in environmental protection were honoured by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their Instagram account on International Youth Day in 2019.

Elizabeth was also highlighted on the website of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.

Elizabeth Wanjiru Wathuti is currently 26 years old. Wathuti was born on 1st August, in the year 1995. Wathuti was raised in Nyeri County, which is known for having Kenya’s most fantastic forest cover.

Wathuti planted her first tree when she was seven years old and started an environmental club at her high school with the support of her geography teacher, who agreed to serve as the organization’s patron.

Elizabeth was a member of the Kenyatta University Environmental Club (KUNEC) leadership team, where she could participate in a variety of events.

The events included tree planting, clean-ups, and environmental education while raising awareness of global environmental issues such as climate change.

Green Generation Initiative was created in 2016 to foster more young environmentalists, provide practical environmental and climate education, increase climate resilience, and green schools.

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) highlighted her film “The Forest is a Part of Me” as part of Youth Voices in Landscapes.
